The UAE Federal Tax Authority has launched an advanced digital platform powered by artificial intelligence to simplify value-added tax refunds for tourists, marking a significant step in the country’s efforts to modernise government services and improve the visitor experience.
The authority confirmed that the new system has reduced the overall time required to refund eligible tourist purchases from approximately nine days to just one working day, effective October 2026. The improvement positions the UAE among the fastest countries worldwide in processing tourist tax refunds.
The platform is now operational at three major airports: Dubai International Airport, Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah International Airport. It was developed in cooperation with Planet, the authorised operator of the UAE’s tourist VAT refund scheme.
To use the service, tourists download the Planet application, register through facial recognition, and provide their passport and payment card information. Before departure, they scan a QR code available at designated airport service points to initiate the refund process.
Artificial intelligence then assesses the transaction and determines whether the refund can be completed automatically. Applications requiring additional verification are directed to smart gates equipped with facial recognition technology and, where necessary, self-service facilities.
Abdulaziz Mohammed Al Mulla, Director-General of the Federal Tax Authority, said the initiative reflects the UAE’s commitment to proactive government services, reduced administrative procedures, and the use of modern technology to improve operational efficiency.
According to the authority, approximately AED 4.2 billion in VAT has been refunded to tourists since the system was introduced in 2018, covering around 25 million transactions. The network now includes approximately 16,700 registered retail outlets.
The new multilingual platform is designed to help travellers complete airport refund procedures within minutes, while the actual refund timeline has been shortened substantially. Additional verification may still be required depending on the nature of each transaction.
