Authorities in the United Arab Emirates have issued an important reminder to social media users about the legal consequences of posting offensive comments, insulting others or making defamatory accusations online. Conduct that may appear minor to some users can carry serious criminal penalties under existing federal legislation.

The warning forms part of the “The UAE Is Safe with Your Digital Awareness” campaign, launched by the Ministry of Interior in cooperation with Dubai Police and the Dubai Electronic Security Centre to promote responsible online behaviour and raise awareness of cybercrime risks.

The campaign highlights Article 43 of Federal Decree-Law No. 34 of 2021 on Combating Rumours and Cybercrimes, which addresses insults and defamatory statements committed through information networks and digital technologies.

Under the provision, individuals who insult another person or attribute an incident to someone that could expose them to punishment or public contempt may face imprisonment, a fine ranging from AED 250,000 to AED 500,000, or either penalty, depending on the circumstances and the court’s determination.

The law also provides for stricter penalties where the offence targets a public official or a person entrusted with a public service in connection with their duties. These provisions aim to protect individuals against harmful online attacks and reputational damage.

Authorities have urged users to think carefully before posting or sharing offensive content, emphasizing that online communication carries legal responsibilities and that personal attacks, mockery and defamatory allegations may constitute criminal offences.

The awareness initiative coincides with Cybersecurity Awareness Month in October and supports broader efforts to improve digital safety, prevent cybercrime and encourage respectful communication across online platforms.

Importantly, the penalties highlighted in the campaign are not newly introduced fines. They are established under existing UAE federal legislation, while the current development is the renewed public awareness warning issued through the joint campaign.
