Saudi Arabia’s Roads General Authority has highlighted technical requirements under the Saudi Road Code regulating the location of roadside parking spaces, as part of efforts to improve traffic safety and raise safety and efficiency standards across the Kingdom’s road network.

Under the requirements, the first parking space at an intersection controlled by traffic signals must be located at least 15 meters from the stopping area at the traffic light, helping preserve visibility and maintain safer and more organized vehicle movement around intersections.

At intersections without traffic signals, the Saudi Road Code requires a minimum distance of 6 meters between the intersection and the first parking space. The requirements also call for a safe distance between pedestrian crossings and the nearest parking space.

The standards additionally require parallel parking areas to be divided by separators. This is intended to prevent empty spaces between parking areas from being used as additional vehicle lanes, helping improve traffic organization and reduce practices that could create safety risks near intersections.

The Roads General Authority said the Saudi Road Code serves as a comprehensive technical reference for entities responsible for the Kingdom’s road sector. It supports unified technical and operational standards covering road planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance, with the broader objective of improving efficiency and safety across Saudi Arabia’s road network.
