A recent report from the New York Post has revealed a surprising decision by the mayor of a small town in Georgia. Ron Shinnick, the mayor of Cohutta, took the drastic step of dissolving the town's entire police department following an incident involving his wife.
According to WDEF, Mayor Shinnick made the decision earlier this week to close down the Cohutta Police Department and terminate all ten of its employees. This action was allegedly prompted by inappropriate comments made by officers on Facebook about his wife, Pam Shinnick.
A stark notice placed on the police department's door on Wednesday morning stated that the department had been disbanded and all staff dismissed. It remains unclear whether the officers were informed beforehand or if they discovered their dismissals upon arriving at work.
When questioned about the situation, Shinnick remarked bluntly, "They'll get their pay. We're not like that, I appreciate their service. But it's time for a change."
The controversy began late last month when several officers filed official complaints against Pam Shinnick. Despite her previous termination for allegedly creating a hostile work environment in the town of fewer than 1,000 residents, she reportedly continued to have access to confidential information.
Following these complaints, Mayor Shinnick held a press conference with Police Chief Greg Fowler and town attorney Brian Rayburn. They announced that they had resolved the issue through "open dialogue and good faith mediation." Nevertheless, just a week later, the entire police force was dismissed.
The Cohutta Police Department was shut down by Mayor Ron Shinnick following alleged inappropriate Facebook comments about his wife, Pam Shinnick.
Sgt. Jeremy May, one of the dismissed officers, expressed his belief that the move was personal retaliation by the mayor. He mentioned that they were previously assured their jobs were secure despite their complaints about the mayor's wife.
"The official response from the town attorney was that our jobs weren't at risk," May stated. "Yet here we are less than a week later without employment. We stood up for transparency and it cost us our jobs."
Mayor Shinnick attributed the firings to "inappropriate comments" posted by officers on Facebook. The specific nature of these comments hasn't been disclosed.
The fired officers have been ordered to return all police department equipment. In their absence, law enforcement responsibilities in Cohutta will be taken over by the Whitfield County Sheriff's Office.
