The United Arab Emirates is commemorating today, Saturday, the second anniversary of Union Pledge Day on July 18, a national occasion that reflects pride in the country’s federal journey initiated by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and the founding leaders who established the foundations of a modern state.

This occasion revives a defining historical moment that paved the way for the formation of the union in 1971, when the constitution was signed and the name “United Arab Emirates” was officially declared for the first time, marking the birth of a nation that rapidly advanced to a leading global position.

The designation of this day was directed by President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to honor the historic meeting held on July 18, 1971, during which Sheikh Zayed and the rulers signed the Union Document and the constitution, announcing the union statement and the official name of the country, a crucial step leading to the formal establishment of the UAE on December 2 of the same year.

Union Pledge Day plays a key role in strengthening national awareness among citizens and residents, highlighting the milestones that led to the country’s formation, and reinforcing core national values such as unity, cohesion, and collective responsibility, which remain central to the UAE’s continued progress.

Under its current leadership, the UAE continues to accelerate its development trajectory, transitioning from foundation to empowerment and now to global leadership, achieving significant advancements across economic and development sectors while solidifying its status as a competitive and forward-looking nation on the world stage.
