Kuwait’s General Traffic Department has approved a new smart home impound system for vehicles whose traffic violations require detention. The system will officially come into effect on Sunday, September 6, 2026, under approved procedures and regulations.

The new service is designed to simplify traffic procedures and give vehicle owners greater flexibility while completing the required impound period. Instead of keeping every vehicle at a traffic impound yard, eligible vehicles can be placed under the smart home system.

A smart device will be installed on the vehicle at the location where the violation occurs. The impound period will begin at midnight on the same day, allowing sufficient time for the vehicle to be moved to the designated home-impound location.

The installation fee has been set at 10 Kuwaiti dinars, with an additional ground fee of 2 dinars for each day of the impound period. Vehicles already held at traffic impound yards can also be transferred to the smart system to complete the remaining period.

Once the impound period ends, the violator will receive a notification through the “Sahel” app confirming that the period has been completed. The vehicle owner must then visit a location designated by the General Traffic Department to complete the release procedures.

Authorities urged motorists across Kuwait to comply with traffic regulations and avoid violations, stressing that the new system forms part of ongoing efforts to modernize traffic services, simplify procedures and strengthen road safety.
