Plans for a significant visit by U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Moscow have been postponed, as reported by Russian media on Sunday. This comes after recent speculations about renewed efforts to halt the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The Russian news agency TASS cited an unidentified source indicating that the visit is unlikely to take place before the end of August. The source mentioned that there are specific reasons for this delay, though details were not disclosed.
Despite the postponement, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that President Vladimir Putin remains willing to meet with the American representatives once more. He emphasized that any future discussions would depend on the nature of the proposals they bring forward.
This delay occurs amidst heightened tensions between Russia and Ukraine, marked by increased Ukrainian drone attacks targeting areas deep within Russian territory, away from the frontline.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held talks with U.S. Senators Richard Blumenthal and James Lankford. During the meeting, Zelensky expressed gratitude for their efforts to increase pressure on Russia within both chambers of the U.S. Congress. He also voiced hope for the eventual implementation of Senator Lindsey Graham's proposed legislation concerning sanctions against Russia and Iran.
Zelensky further informed the senators about ongoing Russian ballistic missile attacks, underlining the critical need for countermeasures. He emphasized that authorizing the production of Patriot systems would significantly aid in defense efforts.
