Pope Leo has made a heartfelt appeal for urgent international intervention to tackle the severe Ebola outbreak currently ravaging the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Pope emphasized that the epidemic has already claimed over 2,500 lives.
During his weekly address to the faithful gathered in St. Peter's Square on Sunday, Pope Leo expressed deep concern, stating, "In my prayers, I often contemplate the Democratic Republic of the Congo, particularly with the relentless spread of the Ebola epidemic, which is tragically taking many lives."
He further urged, "I call upon the international community to act swiftly and comprehensively, involving local communities in prevention efforts to save as many lives as possible."
This marks the seventeenth wave of Ebola infections in Congo. As of late last month, it has become the largest outbreak in the nation's history by surpassing previous records set during the 2018-2020 epidemic.
The disease has rapidly spread across vast regions of the African nation. According to United Nations officials, this outbreak is leading to an unprecedented number of cases and fatalities.
