Under the country’s existing immigration framework, residents who meet the applicable financial, accommodation and documentation conditions can apply to bring qualifying family members to live with them in the UAE. The service is available to eligible employees, investors and business owners holding valid residence permits, subject to approval by the competent immigration authorities.
According to the UAE Government’s official portal and the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security, the minimum monthly income requirement is AED 4,000, or AED 3,000 when accommodation is provided by the employer. The authorities have replaced the previous occupation-based requirement with an income-based eligibility standard. Consequently, expatriate employees are not automatically excluded from family sponsorship simply because of their job titles, provided that they meet the required financial, housing and administrative conditions.
The eligible family categories include a resident’s spouse, unmarried daughters and sons under the age of 25, together with children of determination under the applicable provisions. Holders of the UAE’s Green Residence may also sponsor first-degree relatives in accordance with the conditions governing that residence category. However, qualifying family relationships do not automatically guarantee approval, because sponsors must provide the necessary supporting documents, establish their financial eligibility and demonstrate that suitable accommodation is available.
The official documentation requirements include a passport for each sponsored family member that remains valid for at least six months, a recent personal photograph and evidence of the sponsor’s valid UAE residence permit. Applicants may also need to provide salary documentation or other proof of income, an authenticated tenancy contract or property ownership evidence, and supporting health insurance documents. A duly authenticated marriage certificate is required when sponsoring a spouse, while children’s birth certificates are needed to establish their relationship to the sponsor and confirm their ages.
Family members who have reached the age of 18 must undergo and pass the required medical fitness examination at an approved healthcare facility in the UAE. Additional steps include completing the applicable Emirates ID procedures, security checks and other immigration requirements. The precise documentation and processing arrangements may vary according to the applicant’s circumstances and the authority responsible for immigration services in the relevant emirate. Residents should therefore use the appropriate official government channel and review the instructions generated for their applications.
The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security specifies that expatriates entering the country for residence purposes must complete their residence issuance procedures within 60 days of entry, or applicable overstay penalties may arise. Family residence permits are linked to the sponsoring resident’s immigration status and cannot remain valid beyond the sponsor’s permit. If the sponsor’s residence is cancelled, the dependants’ residence status must also be addressed through the appropriate procedures. The UAE Government’s family sponsorship guidance describes a six-month period following the expiry or cancellation of dependants’ visas for obtaining new residency arrangements, although applicants should verify the period applicable to their individual cases.
There is no single universal charge that can accurately represent the total cost of every family residence application in the UAE. The final amount can depend on the type and duration of the residence permit, the emirate handling the application, Emirates ID charges, medical fitness testing, health insurance and related administrative services. Residents should distinguish the minimum income needed for sponsorship eligibility from the actual government processing fees. Preparing valid residence documents, authenticated family certificates, evidence of suitable housing and the necessary financial information before applying can help families avoid administrative delays and complete their applications through the official immigration channels.
