The procedures cover mandatory insurance, technical inspections where applicable, the settlement of traffic violations and the relevant government fees. Eligible vehicle owners, including citizens and expatriate residents, can use Bahrain’s electronic government services to complete the renewal process without visiting a service center when their applications meet the required conditions.
According to Bahrain’s national government portal, a vehicle registration certificate can be renewed during the three months preceding its scheduled expiry date. This provides vehicle owners with an opportunity to complete the necessary arrangements before their current registration expires. Drivers should use this period to check the validity of their insurance, determine whether a technical inspection is necessary and verify that there are no outstanding traffic violations preventing the renewal procedure.
The General Directorate of Traffic requires vehicles to pass an annual technical inspection when their registration category falls within the inspection rules. Vehicles registered as private are generally exempt from the periodic inspection requirement until their age exceeds five years. Once a private vehicle is more than five years old, the regular inspection requirement applies. The inspection is intended to confirm that vehicles meet the relevant roadworthiness and safety standards, while the competent authority retains its statutory inspection powers in circumstances where additional checks are justified.
Insurance is another essential requirement. The official renewal instructions specify that a vehicle must carry insurance valid for a full year beginning with its registration month, with coverage meeting at least the minimum third-party liability requirement. Vehicle owners must also settle all traffic violations associated with the selected vehicle before completing the renewal. Where a violation has been referred to court, the matter must first be resolved with the General Directorate of Traffic before the registration renewal can be finalized electronically.
The annual registration fee depends on the vehicle’s unladen weight. The stated charge is BHD 15 for vehicles weighing no more than 2.5 tonnes, BHD 30 for those exceeding 2.5 tonnes but not exceeding five tonnes, and BHD 36 for vehicles weighing more than five tonnes up to seven tonnes. The fee rises to BHD 60 for vehicles exceeding seven tonnes but not exceeding eleven tonnes, and BHD 65 for heavier vehicles. Motorcycles have an annual registration fee of BHD 10. These amounts relate to the stated vehicle categories and should not be confused with any additional charges applicable to the transaction.
Technical inspection charges are separate from the basic annual registration fee. An internal inspection conducted by the General Directorate of Traffic costs BHD 5 per inspection, while an external inspection performed by a traffic authority inspector costs BHD 15. Where an authorized private inspection company conducts the examination, its own applicable inspection charge is collected by that provider. Consequently, the total cost of renewal can vary depending on the vehicle’s category, insurance arrangements and whether a technical inspection is required.
The official service instructions also explain how late renewal fees are calculated. A charge of 500 Bahraini fils applies for each day beginning on the day after the registration certificate expires. This daily calculation continues for up to forty days, after which the late fee reaches a fixed amount of BHD 20. The government service directory describes the maximum late registration charge as BHD 20 per year. Vehicle owners should remember that this is an additional late fee and does not replace the ordinary registration, insurance or inspection costs that may be payable.
To complete the electronic procedure, the applicant accesses the General Directorate of Traffic services through Bahrain’s national portal and selects vehicle registration renewal. The required information includes the vehicle number and plate type, followed by the owner’s personal number or the relevant commercial registration number for a company-owned vehicle. After the system verifies eligibility and the applicant pays the applicable government charges and any outstanding violations, the renewal can be completed through the electronic channel. The Traffic Directorate estimates approximately five minutes for the service when all requirements have been satisfied. Checking renewal deadlines, insurance coverage and inspection requirements in advance can help motorists maintain valid registration and avoid unnecessary additional charges.
