Flight disruptions at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh continue to affect travelers and residents as Saudi aviation authorities carry out safety inspections and operational readiness assessments following attacks on airport facilities earlier this month.
As of Friday, October 16, 2026, airport operations remain suspended. Published aviation information indicates that the current closure period extends until 9:00 PM GMT on Saturday, October 17, corresponding to midnight at the beginning of Sunday, October 18, in Saudi Arabia.
However, the Saudi General Authority of Civil Aviation has not announced a confirmed reopening date. Travelers should understand that the expiry of an aviation closure notice does not automatically mean that the airport will reopen or that scheduled flights will resume.
On Monday, October 12, the authority officially announced an extension of the suspension of operations at King Khalid International Airport. It explained that the decision was necessary to complete procedures for verifying the safety of airport facilities and their operational readiness in coordination with the relevant authorities.
The extension followed a series of attacks targeting the airport and its infrastructure, prompting additional security assessments, inspections, and operational checks intended to protect passengers, employees, aircraft, and airport facilities.
The disruption has affected both domestic and international travel, with airlines canceling or postponing numerous flights to and from Riyadh. Some carriers have also adjusted their schedules and introduced temporary travel arrangements in response to the evolving situation.
Importantly, airline suspension dates may differ from the airport’s published closure period. Each airline makes its own operational decisions based on safety assessments, route availability, aircraft positioning, and applicable aviation restrictions.
Consequently, some flights may remain canceled even after authorities permit certain airport operations to resume. Passengers should therefore rely on direct confirmation from their airline rather than assuming that their original departure will operate as scheduled.
Travelers holding tickets for Friday, Saturday, or the following days are strongly advised not to travel to the airport unless their airline has confirmed that the flight will operate and that passenger access to the relevant terminal is permitted.
Passengers should regularly check airline applications, official websites, text messages, and email notifications for updated departure times, cancellations, and alternative travel arrangements.
Those affected by canceled flights should retain their booking references and official cancellation notices. Depending on the airline, ticket conditions, and applicable regulations, travelers may be offered alternative flights, rebooking options, or refunds.
Saudi citizens and expatriate residents currently outside the kingdom should contact their airlines to discuss available travel alternatives and avoid making additional bookings without confirming that the proposed route is operating.
The General Authority of Civil Aviation continues to prioritize the safety of civil aviation facilities and passengers. Any definitive reopening date must be confirmed through official announcements, while travelers should continue monitoring their individual bookings for the latest operational information.
