Bahrain’s Labour Market Regulatory Authority has outlined the regulations governing the renewal of expatriate work permits, helping employers maintain lawful employment arrangements and select appropriate renewal periods according to the applicable permit category and eligibility requirements.
According to official LMRA information, work permits may be renewed for different durations, including six months, one year or two years, depending on the permit category and relevant conditions. Employers must ensure that the necessary requirements are satisfied and the applicable government fees are paid.
The regulatory framework allows employers or their authorized representatives to submit renewal applications within a period not exceeding 180 days before the existing work permit expires. Applications must be completed through approved LMRA channels using accurate employee and permit information.
Renewal costs vary according to the type and duration of the permit. Charges may include work permit issuance or renewal fees, healthcare-related fees and recurring monthly employer charges. Employers should review their official invoices carefully, as commercial-sector permits and registered worker permits have different fee structures.
On August 30, 2026, the authority announced improvements to its work permit renewal service for Golden Residency holders. The enhanced service allows employers to renew eligible permits electronically before expiration, with available renewal periods of six months, one year or two years.
Under this improvement, processing time for the Golden Residency category was reduced from ten working days to an immediate automated procedure. The authority also reported a 50 percent reduction in required documents and the transition to a fully digital service, simplifying the renewal process.
The LMRA provides employers with access to invoices covering work permit issuance, renewals and employee transfers, as well as monthly charges relating to expatriate workers. Timely payment remains important to avoid penalties and other regulatory consequences arising from overdue fees.
Employers and expatriate workers are encouraged to verify permit validity, passport information, employer eligibility and the applicable renewal category before submitting an application. Official LMRA channels should be consulted for current charges, eligibility requirements and procedural guidance.
