The UAE Government has clarified the requirements governing family residence sponsorship for expatriates, explaining how eligible residents can obtain residence permits for their spouses and children under the country’s established immigration and residency regulations.
According to the UAE Government’s official information portal, expatriates holding valid residence permits may sponsor eligible family members, whether they are employees, investors or business owners. Sponsorship eligibility is primarily based on income and other applicable requirements rather than a particular professional job title.
The financial requirement specifies a minimum monthly salary of AED 4,000, or AED 3,000 when accommodation is provided by the employer. Applicants must also demonstrate that suitable residential accommodation is available for their family members, with sufficient space for the household.
Eligible dependents generally include a husband or wife, unmarried daughters, sons below the age of 25 and children with special needs, subject to applicable conditions. Green Residence holders may also sponsor first-degree relatives under the relevant regulations.
Required documentation includes a passport valid for at least six months, a recent personal photograph, proof of family relationship through authenticated marriage or birth certificates where required, evidence of the sponsor’s valid residence status and income, suitable accommodation documentation and health insurance.
Family members aged 18 or above must successfully complete the required medical fitness examination at an approved healthcare facility. Applicants must also complete residence permit and Emirates ID procedures through the relevant official immigration channels, including the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security or the competent Dubai authorities.
Family residence permits are linked to the sponsor’s residence status and cannot exceed its validity. When the sponsor’s residence permit expires or is cancelled, dependents must regularize their immigration status in accordance with the applicable grace periods and procedures to avoid potential penalties.
Residents planning to sponsor family members are advised to review current documentation requirements, government fees and eligibility conditions before submitting applications. Certain procedures may vary depending on the emirate, residence category and individual circumstances.
