His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi , Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, has announced a major infrastructure project aimed at improving traffic flow between the Emirate of Sharjah and the Emirate of Dubai through the construction of a dual tunnel on Al Taawun Road.
During a phone interview on the “Direct Line” program, he explained that Al Taawun Road is one of the most critical and heavily used routes connecting the two emirates, experiencing daily congestion, especially during peak hours. This has made advanced engineering solutions necessary to improve traffic efficiency. He noted that the new project involves an underground dual-direction tunnel designed to significantly ease congestion and allow smoother vehicle movement in both directions, thereby improving daily commuting experience for residents. He also highlighted that Al Taawun Square, a familiar landmark with sentimental value for many residents, will be carefully handled during the development process. Specialized engineering teams have studied the site and confirmed that existing elements can be preserved and reinstalled after construction works are completed. The project reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen infrastructure between Sharjah and Dubai, keeping pace with rapid urban growth and population expansion, while enhancing mobility and quality of life across both emirates.
