Abu Dhabi Police have issued an important road safety warning concerning a dangerous driving practice that can lead to serious traffic accidents and substantial penalties. The warning urges motorists to remain alert, follow traffic regulations and avoid sudden manoeuvres that could endanger themselves and other road users, particularly on busy highways and major roads across the emirate.

In cooperation with the Monitoring and Control Centre, Abu Dhabi Police released actual footage of traffic accidents caused by motorists reversing their vehicles in unsafe circumstances. The video forms part of an awareness initiative intended to demonstrate the consequences of dangerous driving decisions and encourage safer behaviour among both Emirati citizens and expatriate residents.

The Traffic and Security Patrols Directorate explained that reversing after missing a highway exit or designated turning lane creates a serious collision risk. When a driver stops unexpectedly and begins moving backwards, vehicles approaching from behind may have insufficient time to react, potentially resulting in severe crashes, injuries and significant property damage.

Authorities confirmed that reversing a vehicle dangerously carries a fine of AED 500 and four traffic black points. A more serious offence applies when a vehicle is driven in a manner that endangers the life, safety or security of the driver or others. Under that provision, the penalty is AED 2,000, 23 traffic black points and the impoundment of a light vehicle for 60 days.

Abu Dhabi Police stressed that motorists who miss their intended exit should never attempt to reverse towards it. Instead, drivers must continue along the road, take the next available exit and return to their destination using permitted routes. This approach helps maintain predictable traffic movement and substantially reduces the likelihood of preventable collisions.

The authorities also encouraged drivers to plan their journeys, pay attention to directional signs and remain aware of approaching exits and lane changes. Motorists were reminded that saving a few minutes is never worth risking a serious accident or facing legal penalties. The warning reflects Abu Dhabi Police’s continuing efforts to improve road safety and protect lives and property throughout the emirate.
