A Pakistani resident was killed and 11 people were injured when King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh was targeted on Sunday, October 11, Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Civil Aviation said. The authority said the attack also caused property damage, which was still being assessed.

The incident came one day after a strike on the airport, claimed by Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis, killed 13 people and injured 309. The airport was closed following that attack, which was described as the deadliest in Saudi Arabia in more than a decade.

Saudi-led coalition forces in Yemen said an unidentified projectile struck Terminal 4 at Riyadh’s international airport on Sunday, causing a fire.

The coalition also said Saudi air defences intercepted a cruise missile near King Khalid International Airport. It later reported intercepting and destroying a drone in the Eastern Province, as well as intercepting a ballistic missile launched toward Khamis Mushait.

Emergency alerts were issued early on Monday in Abha, southern Saudi Arabia, but the Saudi Civil Defence said the danger had passed.

Airport attacks over the past week

Sunday’s attack raised the death toll from attacks on Riyadh’s airport during the past week to 18, according to the information provided by Saudi authorities.

Among those killed in Saturday’s attack were four Saudis and eight residents. The residents included two Bangladeshis and one person each from the United States, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Palestine, Sudan and India.

Two attacks on October 8 killed three Saudis at the airport. On October 6 and 7, two airports, including King Khalid International Airport, were attacked. One Sudanese resident was killed in the attack on King Khalid airport.

Attacks on Saudi Arabia have intensified after the Kingdom increased its military involvement in Yemen. Saudi Arabia has launched strikes against the Houthis and backed Operation Dawn of Yemen, a government counteroffensive launched after the Houthis seized strategic territory along the Red Sea coast last month.
