Bahrain’s Ministry of Interior has announced that the General Directorate of Traffic will intensify field inspections across the Kingdom in coordination with police directorates in all governorates. The initiative aims to improve public safety and address dangerous practices associated with the growing use of bicycles and electric scooters in public spaces.
The Traffic Directorate explained that the enforcement campaigns will focus on violations of Decision No. 58 of 2026, which establishes requirements governing the use of electric scooters and related vehicles. Authorities stressed that individuals found breaching applicable rules may face legal proceedings in accordance with the relevant traffic legislation.
Under the regulations, electric scooters must be operated only in designated areas and must not exceed a maximum speed of 25 kilometres per hour. Riders are prohibited from carrying an additional passenger or travelling against the direction of traffic, with the restrictions intended to reduce collisions and other preventable incidents.
The Directorate also emphasised the importance of wearing protective helmets and following all relevant safety requirements. Special restrictions apply to young children, with those under seven years of age prohibited from riding electric scooters unless they are under the direct supervision and monitoring of a parent or designated caregiver.
Parents and guardians have been reminded of their responsibility to supervise children’s use of bicycles and electric scooters and prevent unsafe or unlawful riding practices. Officials warned that certain violations may result in penalties reaching six months of imprisonment and a fine of 500 Bahraini dinars, depending on the specific offence and the legal provisions applicable to it.
The authorities further instructed electric scooter and bicycle riders to comply immediately with directions issued by traffic patrols and police officers, including stopping when requested. Ignoring such instructions can constitute a separate violation and may also create additional risks for other road users.
The announcement reflects Bahrain’s continuing efforts to promote responsible use of modern personal transport devices while strengthening road safety standards. Citizens and expatriate residents are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the official regulations, follow designated routes and safety requirements, and ensure that children use these devices only under the conditions permitted by law.
