Bahrain

Bahrain offers an electronic government service that allows eligible expatriate workers to renew residency and work permits while they are outside the Kingdom. The facility is administered through cooperation between Nationality, Passports and Residence Affairs and the Labour Market Regulatory Authority, helping employers complete qualifying immigration and employment procedures remotely.

The service covers eligible expatriates working in commercial and government sectors, as well as registered workers and domestic employees under the applicable categories. Its purpose is to simplify administrative procedures and reduce the need for workers to return to Bahrain solely to complete certain renewal requirements.

One of the principal conditions is that an expatriate employee’s work permit must remain valid when the renewal application is submitted while the employee is abroad. Employers must complete the process before the permit expires and satisfy any additional requirements concerning documentation, eligibility and applicable government fees.

Employers can use the Expatriate Management System and approved LMRA channels to process qualifying work permit renewals. Relevant residency services are also available through Bahrain’s national government portal, depending on the permit category and the requirements established by the responsible authority.

The arrangement can be particularly useful for businesses managing employees who are temporarily overseas for family, professional or personal reasons. However, eligibility is not automatic for every residency category, and applicants should verify the conditions that apply to their individual permits before proceeding.

Importantly, this service was officially introduced in September 2023 and remains a previously established government facility, rather than a newly announced decision in October 2026. Expatriates and employers are therefore encouraged to consult the official government platforms for the latest requirements and processing procedures.
