Jazan in Saudi Arabia continues to stand out in the Kingdom’s rainfall scene, with repeated episodes of heavy rain, flowing valleys and streams, and rising water levels in several locations.

The rainy conditions have coincided with thunderstorm activity, creating striking natural scenes captured by photographers and weather enthusiasts. Attention is now turning to possible weather developments across the region during the remainder of October and into November 2026.

Explaining the factors behind these weather conditions, Ali Mashhoor, a member of the Saudi Weather and Climate Society, told Ajel newspaper that a combination of climatic and geographical characteristics makes Jazan particularly suitable for thundercloud formation and rainfall. These factors include rising thermal currents, abundant atmospheric moisture, orographic lifting caused by terrain, and converging winds. Together, they can strengthen upward air movement and contribute to the development of towering local clouds that may produce intense lightning.

Mashhoor explained that autumn brings atmospheric conditions that can increase the likelihood of rainfall in Jazan. These include warm, moisture-laden air moving from the southern Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, alongside moisture carried in the upper atmosphere from the Arabian Sea. When these conditions coincide with other supportive weather factors, they can provide a favorable environment for rainclouds to develop.

He added that thermal heating and the influence of mountainous terrain help push warm air upward, while converging winds can further strengthen rising air currents. When combined with sufficient atmospheric moisture, these processes increase the potential for thunderstorm development. They also help explain some of the heavy rainfall and repeated lightning activity observed in Jazan during this period of the year.

According to Mashhoor, the heavy rainfall recorded in the region during October falls within its usual seasonal rainfall patterns. Several governorates have been affected, with the Tihama areas among those experiencing greater impacts, depending on cloud distribution, rainfall intensity, and local terrain.

The report, citing Mashhoor’s account of updates from the National Center for Meteorology, indicated that the likelihood of rainfall could increase during the remainder of October and extend into November across several Jazan governorates. These prospects remain dependent on evolving weather conditions, making continued monitoring of official forecasts particularly important as further thunderstorms and heavy downpours remain possible in some locations.

Jazan recorded notable rainfall during the first week of October. Scattered locations experienced rain on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, while rainfall measured on Wednesday, October 7, reached approximately 33.7 millimeters. An earlier Ajel report, citing National Center for Meteorology data, stated that Jazan recorded the Kingdom’s highest rainfall total for that day.

Beyond the dramatic scenery, rainfall can support water resources, replenish the flow of valleys and streams, and encourage the growth of natural vegetation and grazing lands. Water that infiltrates the ground may also contribute to groundwater replenishment, depending on soil conditions, rock formations, and the amount of water available.

However, thunderstorms and heavy rainfall can also bring significant hazards, including flash floods, lightning, and powerful downdraft winds. Residents should therefore follow official instructions issued by the National Center for Meteorology and Saudi Civil Defense, stay away from flood channels and water accumulations, and avoid crossing roads covered by flowing water.

As Jazan continues to experience notable autumn weather, attention remains focused on the rainfall outlook for the coming weeks. While further rainfall could benefit the region’s water resources and natural environment, monitoring official forecasts and observing safety guidance remain essential throughout the rainy period.
