Bahrain’s Cabinet approved a memorandum of understanding on railway cooperation between the Kingdom’s Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications and Saudi Arabia’s Transport General Authority during its regular weekly meeting on Monday, October 26, 2026. The decision marks another step in the two neighbouring countries’ efforts to strengthen coordination in transport and infrastructure development.

The approval was announced following the Cabinet meeting chaired by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Bahrain, at Gudaibiya Palace. The meeting addressed several government and economic matters, including the proposed memorandum concerning cooperation in the railway sector.

The development is significant given the close economic and geographical ties between Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. Improved transport connectivity could eventually create opportunities for more efficient passenger movement, freight services and logistics operations, while supporting broader economic integration across the Gulf region.

The latest approval follows earlier bilateral initiatives. In December 2025, Bahrain’s Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications announced a separate memorandum with the Saudi Railway Polytechnic, known as SRP, aimed at developing national expertise through specialist training in railway operations, maintenance and management.

Further cooperation took place in June 2026, when railway specialists from Bahrain’s Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications and Saudi Arabia’s Transport General Authority participated in a workshop organized by the GCC Railways Authority. The event focused on regulatory coordination, legislative frameworks and the exchange of technical experience relevant to future railway development.

The wider regional context includes the Gulf Cooperation Council’s long-term railway integration programme, which aims to strengthen connections between member states and support trade, logistics and economic mobility. Bahrain-Saudi coordination forms part of the broader institutional cooperation required for such regional ambitions.

However, the Cabinet’s approval should not be confused with the launch of a new passenger railway service. The published announcement did not specify a construction timetable, route alignment, project budget, opening date, passenger schedules or ticket prices for a rail link between Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.

Further operational details would therefore depend on subsequent announcements from the relevant authorities. For now, the confirmed development is the Bahraini Cabinet’s approval of the railway cooperation memorandum, representing an additional formal step in bilateral transport coordination.
