Abu Dhabi authorities have reiterated the importance of using designated cycling routes and avoiding pedestrian-only paths when riding bicycles or electric scooters.

According to a report published by the UAE newspaper Al Khaleej on Sunday, October 18, 2026, riders who use bicycles or scooters on walking or jogging paths, or in other unauthorized areas, may face a fine of AED 500.

Abdullah Al Aryani, Acting Executive Director of the Planning and Strategic Affairs Sector at the Integrated Transport Centre, clarified that the penalty is applied under Administrative Decision No. 21 of 2022.

This means the fine is not a newly introduced penalty. The latest report provides a renewed clarification of an existing regulation and its enforcement.

The official also explained that the violation applies to the bicycle or scooter rider rather than pedestrians using their designated pathways.

The reminder comes as Abu Dhabi continues efforts to improve safety across public spaces and transport networks used by different categories of road and pathway users.

Bicycles and electric scooters have become increasingly common in recent years, serving not only recreational purposes but also everyday transportation needs.

Many residents use these vehicles for short journeys between neighborhoods, local destinations and public transport stations.

However, the growing use of micromobility devices makes compliance with designated routes especially important for protecting pedestrians and riders.

Authorities emphasized that cycling infrastructure is developed according to the location, expected demand and intended use of each route.

Depending on the site, facilities may include separated pathways, safe crossing arrangements, road markings, guidance signs and protective features.

Some routes also offer lighting, shaded rest areas, bicycle parking, rental stations and other supporting facilities.

Riders should therefore check the applicable signs and markings before entering a pathway, rather than assuming every public walkway permits bicycles or scooters.

Using designated routes helps reduce conflicts between pedestrians and riders and supports safer movement through public spaces.

The renewed reminder highlights the need for residents and visitors to understand local mobility rules and avoid unnecessary penalties.
