In a significant legal decision, Pakistan's Supreme Court has mandated the transfer of former Prime Minister Imran Khan from his current confinement in prison to the Shifa International Hospital. This development has been warmly received by Khan's political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), as well as his family.

The 73-year-old leader has reportedly suffered substantial vision loss in his right eye while incarcerated, as stated by his legal counsel. His son has consistently voiced concern over Khan's deteriorating health condition, particularly over the past year, amid a slew of legal challenges that Khan asserts are politically motivated following his ousting in 2022.

PTI spokesperson Zulfiqar Bukhari expressed gratitude for the court's ruling but lamented that it did not come sooner, which might have prevented further decline in Khan's health. Bukhari emphasized the importance of Khan remaining in medical care until doctors are fully satisfied with his recovery. The court has instructed that Khan be moved within 48 hours and remain at the hospital until at least September 16.

Since losing power through a no-confidence vote, Khan has been embroiled in numerous legal battles, including allegations of retaining government gifts and an unlawful marriage. Some convictions against him have been suspended or overturned, with appeals ongoing. He steadfastly denies any wrongdoing, insisting that the charges are politically charged.

Earlier this year, prominent cricket figures from across the globe, including those from India, called for improved treatment of Khan during his imprisonment. Despite the legal and political turmoil, PTI still enjoys considerable support in key regions, although it was stripped of its electoral symbol ahead of the 2024 elections, forcing its candidates to run as independents.
