In a recent phone conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed Turkey's readiness to continue supporting diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving the crisis in Iran. Erdogan emphasized the critical importance of diplomatic channels in achieving a peaceful settlement.
Turkey holds a strategic position in these efforts due to its significant military presence as the second-largest army in NATO, its geographical proximity to Iran, and its ability to maintain open communication lines with both Washington and Tehran as well as regional mediators.
Ankara has actively engaged in diplomatic initiatives, notably working to preserve negotiations concerning the Strait of Hormuz. As part of these efforts, the Turkish Foreign Minister has conducted discussions with his Iranian counterpart regarding the reopening of this key waterway and the establishment of a ceasefire.
President Erdogan has adopted a balanced approach, simultaneously criticizing U.S. and Israeli military actions against Iran, while condemning Iranian attacks on Gulf states. He has called for ensuring freedom of navigation, emphasizing the necessity of maintaining peaceful maritime routes.
The conversation between Erdogan and Trump also addressed the escalating Israeli attacks on Gaza amidst the progression into the "second phase" of a peace plan. Additionally, they discussed the trilateral defense agreement involving Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan, exploring ways to enhance bilateral relations.
