Real Madrid has initiated discussions with Portuguese manager José Mourinho, exploring the possibility of his return to the club amidst current turmoil. This development comes as the team faces another season without securing any major titles, stirring a sense of urgency within the club.
Mourinho as a Preferred Candidate
Club president Florentino Pérez sees Mourinho as a leading candidate to replace the current coach, Álvaro Arbeloa, who was promoted from the reserve squad in January 2026. The potential appointment would mark Mourinho's second stint with Real Madrid, following his departure in 2013.
Fabrizio Romano, an Italian journalist renowned for his expertise in transfer markets, reported that Real Madrid has activated what he calls "Operation José Mourinho," indicating ongoing direct communications between the parties involved.
Benfica's Position and Contractual Details
Despite Benfica's strong desire to retain Mourinho, they remain aware of these negotiations. The decision ultimately rests with Real Madrid and its leadership. Any agreement would necessitate paying a contract termination fee of approximately 3 million euros to Benfica, as Mourinho's contract with the Portuguese club extends until June 2027. However, there is a clause allowing him to exit within ten days post-season if this amount is paid.
Pérez holds the decisive power regarding Mourinho's potential return. This situation contrasts with previous managerial appointments such as Xabi Alonso's, which were led by Real Madrid's general manager José Ángel Sánchez.
Mourinho's History at Real Madrid
During his previous tenure at Madrid, which lasted three years, Mourinho secured several trophies. Under his guidance, the team won the La Liga title in the 2011-2012 season setting a new points record. Additionally, they clinched victories in the Copa del Rey (2011) and Supercopa de España (2013).
Alternative Candidates for Coaching Role
While discussions with Mourinho are underway, Real Madrid has also compiled a shortlist of other potential candidates. These include current U.S. national team coach Mauricio Pochettino from Argentina and former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp. Italian coach Massimiliano Allegri and Didier Deschamps of France have also been considered internally as viable options.
