A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck northern Sulawesi Island in Indonesia on Monday, according to the country’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency.

The agency said the epicentre was located 29 kilometres west of Pohuwato Regency in Gorontalo Province. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 76 kilometres.

Indonesia experiences frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity because it lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where several tectonic plates meet.

The country has suffered devastating earthquakes in the past. In 2004, a magnitude 9.1 earthquake hit Aceh Province and triggered a tsunami that killed more than 170,000 people in Indonesia.
