The service allows qualifying property owners to apply for or renew residence permits without relying on a traditional employer-sponsored residency arrangement.

Applicants may choose among residence periods of two, five, or ten years, provided that they satisfy the legal, financial, and documentation requirements established by the responsible authority.

The service is part of Bahrain’s existing residence framework for certain foreign nationals who can demonstrate sufficient residential and financial stability in the country.

One of the main eligibility requirements is ownership of a residential property located in Bahrain, supported by an officially certified ownership document or other accepted evidence establishing the property’s value.

According to the authority’s published service guide, the residential property must have a minimum value of BHD 50,000 and must be registered in the applicant’s name.

Applicants must also demonstrate a legitimate and stable source of income of at least BHD 500, sufficient to support themselves and any family members financially dependent on them.

Meeting the property ownership requirement alone does not guarantee approval, since financial eligibility and the other official requirements must also be fulfilled.

The required documents include a clear copy of a passport valid for more than six months, together with a certificate of good conduct.

Applicants must additionally provide a copy of an electricity bill, certified evidence of ownership of the qualifying residential property, and a valid health insurance certificate issued in Bahrain.

A bank statement covering the previous three months is also required, along with evidence supporting the applicant’s stable and legitimate source of income.

The immigration authority retains the right to request additional information or documents whenever necessary to examine the application and establish eligibility.

Regarding government fees, the official guide lists a non-refundable application fee of BHD 5, payable when submitting the request.

A two-year self-sponsorship residence permit carries an issuance fee of BHD 200, while the fee for a five-year permit is BHD 400.

Applicants selecting a ten-year residence permit must pay BHD 600, and a separate visa transfer charge of BHD 250 applies when the relevant transfer procedure is required.

These charges should be assessed according to the applicant’s individual circumstances, because the total amount payable may include the application fee and any separate procedures that apply.

Applications must be submitted through Bahrain’s official national eGovernment portal, using the relevant service for self-sponsored residency.

Applicants are required to prepare and upload the requested documents, complete the necessary information, and pay the applicable charges according to the electronic service instructions.

The authority publishes a processing period of forty working days for this category of residence permit, although additional verification or incomplete documentation may affect the handling of individual applications.

Once an application is approved, the relevant fees must be paid within thirty days to avoid automatic cancellation of the approved request.

It is particularly important to distinguish this self-sponsorship residence permit from Bahrain’s separate Golden Residency programme, which has different eligibility requirements.

For foreign property owners, the self-sponsorship service specifies a minimum qualifying property value of BHD 50,000, whereas the Golden Residency property-owner category requires qualifying real estate valued at no less than BHD 130,000.

The two programmes also differ in their residence arrangements, documentation requirements, and fee structures, making it essential to choose the appropriate application category.

Furthermore, obtaining self-sponsored residence does not automatically grant authorization to perform every type of professional activity without complying with applicable employment and licensing regulations.

Foreign nationals who need additional clarification can contact the authority through its dedicated self-sponsorship email address or the official contact centre on 17077077.

Applicants are advised to verify their property ownership records, confirm the officially recorded value, and prepare proof of stable income, health insurance, and recent banking information before applying.
