An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8 on the Richter scale struck the city of Ruteng, located at the western tip of Indonesia's Flores Island, early Thursday morning. The tremor was detected in the vicinity of Labuan Bajo, situated 72 kilometers to the northeast.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of this latest seismic event was positioned at a depth of 10 kilometers beneath the Earth's surface. As of now, there have been no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage resulting from this quake.
This incident follows a recent earthquake measuring 5.9 in magnitude that hit Flores Island on Monday, highlighting a period of increased seismic activity in the area.
Meanwhile, Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency has revealed that the death toll from a more powerful earthquake that occurred last Saturday has risen to 72 people. This previous earthquake registered at 7.7 on the Richter scale and had its impact centered in East Nusa Tenggara Province.
The devastation from Saturday's earthquake extended across nine districts within three different provinces in Indonesia. The agency also reported that approximately 82,691 individuals have been displaced due to the natural disaster.
