Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr said the team was surprised when center Kristaps Porzingis reported an illness shortly before training camp, after summer communication had indicated that the veteran was in good condition. The Warriors have not announced a timetable for Porzingis to return.

Porzingis had agreed to a two-year, $40 million contract extension with Golden State during the summer and had been expected to be healthy for the start of the season. Kerr said the team had to adjust after the unexpected update.

“We were definitely caught off guard by it in that we were in communication with him over the summer, and it seemed like everything was in a good place right up until training camp,” Kerr said.

“We had to move forward. I haven’t given it a whole lot of thought to be honest, because we’re just busy,” Kerr added.

Golden State is also without Moses Moody and Jimmy Butler III, making Porzingis’ absence more notable as the team continues without several players. A healthy Porzingis would provide another option alongside Stephen Curry and Yaxel Lendeborg.

In 15 games for the Warriors last season, Porzingis averaged 16.1 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.1 blocks and 0.6 steals per game.
