England goalkeeper Chris Gordon is preparing for an unusual family rivalry at the 2026 Powerchair Football World Cup, where England will face host nation Argentina in Buenos Aires on Sunday. Argentina are coached by Gordon’s father, former professional footballer Colin Gordon.
Chris Gordon, who lives in Kidderminster, is appearing in his fourth World Cup for England. He said his father became involved in powerchair football through him after Gordon grew up as a keen football supporter.
“I was a big football fan growing up. My dad got involved with powerchair football through me,” Gordon told BBC Sport. “But he's now coaching Argentina, so we'll be facing each other in the World Cup.”
The two have previously worked together in the sport. Gordon said they spent a number of years at West Brom, and that his father later coached him with the England national team.
Colin Gordon played as a striker during his professional football career, representing clubs including Birmingham City, Fulham and Leicester City in the 1980s and 1990s. He subsequently became a football agent.
At the 2023 Powerchair Football World Cup, Colin Gordon led England to the final, where the team lost to France on penalties. This time, his son will be lining up for England against an Argentina side coached by his father.
Gordon is confident England will win the family contest. “England will definitely come out on top [against Argentina], so bragging rights will be coming my way,” he said.
