The renewal process is particularly relevant to motorists whose licences are approaching their expiry dates or have already expired. Maintaining a valid driving licence is an important responsibility for anyone operating a vehicle on public roads, especially residents who rely on private cars for commuting, family activities and daily transportation.
According to Qatar’s official Hukoomi government portal, citizens and residents holding smart cards can submit electronic renewal requests for their own driving licences or those of individuals under their sponsorship, where authorized. The specific electronic service described by Hukoomi applies to civilian driving licences for light vehicles only. Drivers holding heavy vehicle licences, motorcycle licences or other specialized categories should therefore verify the relevant procedures and fees rather than assuming that the light vehicle renewal rules apply to every driving licence category.
One important feature of the service concerns the permitted renewal period. The government portal states that applications may be submitted within the six months preceding the expiry of the existing licence, or once the licence has expired. This allows eligible motorists to arrange their renewal in advance instead of waiting until the final day. However, the availability of a renewal procedure after expiry should not be interpreted as permission to drive with an expired licence. Motorists should ensure that their driving authorization remains valid before using their vehicles.
The official renewal fee for a private light vehicle driving licence held by a non-Qatari resident is QAR 250, providing a validity period of five years. For Qatari citizens, the corresponding charge is QAR 500 for a licence valid for ten years. Applicants who select an available delivery service may also pay an additional QAR 20 delivery charge. These amounts should be distinguished from any separate costs associated with medical or other requirements that may apply to a particular driver’s circumstances.
To complete the online transaction, the applicant signs in to the Ministry of Interior’s electronic services portal using a smart card and selects the appropriate authorization for personal or delegated transactions. The user then opens Traffic Services, selects Driving Licences and chooses the driving licence renewal option. The system allows the applicant to select the relevant licence, review the displayed information and specify the preferred method of receiving the renewed document before proceeding to the payment stage.
Once the details have been confirmed, the applicant pays the applicable fees electronically and can print or retain the payment receipt. Hukoomi also confirms that driving licence renewal requests can be submitted through the official Metrash mobile application, giving eligible users an additional way to manage the process from their phones. Applicants should use authorized government services, ensure that their identification information is accurate and protect their login credentials and verification codes throughout the transaction.
Health-related circumstances may affect the appropriate renewal procedure. Qatar’s general driving licence guidance explains that drivers are expected to disclose changes in their health that could affect their ability to drive. For example, someone who has become dependent on prescription glasses may need to visit the Traffic Department and repeat the required vision test. Electronic renewal should therefore not be considered a substitute for a medical or driving fitness assessment where one is necessary under the competent authority’s rules.
The official traffic service schedule also distinguishes renewal from other procedures, including the replacement of lost or damaged driving licences. Charges vary by licence category, with separate amounts applying to heavy vehicles, motorcycles and certain occupational driving permissions. Citizens and expatriate residents are encouraged to review their licence expiry dates, select the correct service category and complete the transaction through official government channels. Keeping the payment confirmation and checking the arrangements for collecting or receiving the renewed licence can help motorists avoid unnecessary delays and maintain proper compliance with Qatar’s road traffic requirements.
