The UAE Ministry of Interior has clarified that speed limit variations across major highways are not random but are based on precise traffic density studies and advanced road engineering standards, following questions raised at the Federal National Council regarding inconsistencies between key routes connecting Dubai and Sharjah.
Brigadier Dr. Rashid Sultan Al Khadr, Director General of Legal Affairs at the Ministry, explained that speed limits are carefully determined using traffic flow data, peak-hour analysis, and safety indicators to ensure optimal road performance and driver safety.
These statements were made during an official session discussing government policy on traffic safety and road efficiency, where council members highlighted concerns about how varying speed limits might affect driver focus and traffic smoothness.
FNC member Sultan bin Yaqoub Al Zaabi pointed out noticeable differences in speed limits on major connecting roads such as Emirates Road and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, questioning whether these variations impact daily commuting efficiency.
Meanwhile, Dr. Adnan Al Hammadi emphasized that sudden changes in speed limits between emirates can create confusion for drivers, especially when transitioning from 140 km/h zones in Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah to 130 km/h in Dubai, before returning again to higher limits outside the emirate.
