During a recent visit to the United States, French President Emmanuel Macron responded to a light-hearted remark made by Britain's King Charles. The exchange took place during an event attended by former U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House.
While speaking, King Charles humorously referenced a past comment by Trump regarding America's role in Europe. He quipped, "You've said recently, Mr. President, that without the United States, European countries would be speaking German. I dare say that without us, you'd be speaking French."
Previously, Trump had remarked that Europe's nations might have been speaking German if not for the U.S., reflecting on World War II's impact.
Macron took to his social media account on the platform X to react to a video clip of King Charles' playful jab, stating simply, "That would be elegant."
The comment comes on the heels of Trump's statement last June before a military parade in Washington, D.C. He explained the parade's significance by saying, "If not for our victory in World War II, you might be speaking German now, or perhaps Japanese, or even a mix of both. We won the war and we're the only nation that didn't celebrate it. We're going to celebrate big."
