The French Government has officially enacted a groundbreaking legislative framework to radically enhance the protection, job stability, and financial security of parents whose children are battling cancer, severe illnesses, or permanent disabilities.
Effective as of June 12, 2026, this monumental social reform fundamentally expands labor rights, emergency leave allowances, and public housing aid to shield caregiver households from economic hardship during medical crises.
Workplace Enhancements Under the New Law
Under the updated labor guidelines, the mandatory statutory leave granted immediately upon a child's diagnosis has been doubled to 10 business days.
Furthermore, the notice period required to inform an employer before taking Parental Attendance Leave (Congé de présence parentale)—a job-protected absence for permanent child care—has been shortened to just 10 days.
Crucially, employers are now strictly prohibited from terminating an employee during this leave, with an additional 10-week protection window added post-leave. Parents also gain the legal right to request flexible, tailored working hours.
Financial Upgrades Under the New Law
Beyond workplace adjustments, the decree introduces vital improvements to the Daily Parental Attendance Allowance (AJPP), a state subsidy for full-time caregiver parents.
To ease administrative burdens, the medical review window to renew this allowance has been extended to 14 months.
Additionally, parents receiving the AJPP are now legally empowered to petition a court to temporarily freeze their personal loan and mortgage repayment obligations during intensive treatment phases.
Long-Term Assets Under the New Law
Looking ahead, parents can now execute early, tax-free withdrawals from their Group Life Insurance or Retirement Savings Plans (PER) if their dependent child faces a severe diagnosis.
In the housing sector, affected families now receive priority access to Public Housing Aid (APL).
Lastly, under the "Mon Soutien Psy" program, the previous 12-session annual cap on psychological counseling has been completely removed for minors suffering from a Long-Term Medical Condition (ALD), ensuring unrestricted mental health support.
