Four shallow earthquakes struck southern Turkey on Saturday, shaking areas near Adana province without causing any reported injuries or damage, according to the country’s AFAD disaster relief agency.
AFAD said on X that there had been “no adverse situation” following the tremors, which occurred in and around the districts of Saimbeyli and Sumbas.
Three of the quakes took place within roughly half an hour during the afternoon. A magnitude 4.8 earthquake hit Saimbeyli district in Adana province at 2.19pm local time (1119 GMT), followed by a magnitude 4.9 tremor at 2.36pm.
A third earthquake, measuring magnitude 5.2, struck Sumbas district at 2.43pm. Sumbas is located about 80 kilometres south of Saimbeyli.
Later in the day, another quake measuring magnitude 4.4 was recorded in Saimbeyli at 7pm, AFAD said.
Area lies near 2023 earthquake epicentre
The affected area is about 150 kilometres from the epicentre of the devastating earthquakes that hit Turkey in February 2023. Those major quakes killed at least 53,000 people.
Turkey is crossed by several geological fault lines and has experienced destructive earthquakes in the past. Saturday’s series of tremors was reported as shallow, but authorities said no harmful consequences had been identified.
