Air India and Air India Express have raised their fuel surcharge by $55, or just over Dh200, on routes serving the Middle East, citing higher jet fuel prices and increased operating costs.

The Indian airlines announced the change on Thursday. It applies to domestic flights as well as selected international services, including routes in the Middle East.

Both carriers operate direct flights to the UAE and to several other destinations across the Gulf and the wider Middle East. The surcharge increase affects their operations as fuel costs continue to form a substantial part of airline spending.

In a joint statement, the airlines said Aviation Turbine Fuel, or ATF, prices have been highly volatile in recent months. They attributed the fluctuations largely to geopolitical developments and continuing pressure on global energy markets.

“The latest increase in fuel prices has further elevated operating costs for airlines,” the statement said. It added that fuel remains a significant component of airlines’ overall expenditure.
