As Australia prepares to commemorate ANZAC Day, residents are urged to check their local trading hours, as restrictions vary significantly between states and territories.

This ANZAC Day, some places will be completely closed, while others will stay open as normal. Here is your guide to what is open and what is closed.

Total Shutdown in New South Wales (NSW)

Due to changes in the law last year, big businesses including Coles, Woolworths, Aldi, and liquor stores will stay closed all day. The old regulation that said "reopen at 1:00 PM" is no longer in effect. But pharmacies, gas stations, and several small cafés and convenience stores are still allowed to do business.

Victoria: Open Again After Noon

Most stores in Victoria won't open until 1:00 PM. After this period, booze stores and grocery stores can open. Essential services will keep running all day without any breaks.

Queensland (QLD): Big stores are closed

The big grocery stores in Queensland will be closed all day. Independent grocery stores and smaller convenience stores could open at 1:00 PM. Some booze outlets will also start selling things in the afternoon.

South Australia (SA): Only a Few Exceptions

There is a tiered structure in SA. In the Adelaide CBD, retailers can open between 12:00 PM and 5:00 PM. Some establishments in the suburbs may stay open until 9:00 PM. But a lot of big regional stores will stay closed.

Australian Capital Territory (ACT): Complete Freedom

In the ACT, there are no rules about trade. On ANZAC Day and the public holiday Monday, stores may do business as usual.

Western Australia (WA): Closed, although not all of it

On ANZAC Day, most big grocery stores will be closed. Some places that sell alcohol may open beyond 1:00 PM. On the public holiday Monday, trading will be done within normal holiday hours, which are usually 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Tasmania: Open in the Afternoon

Most big stores in Tasmania can't open until 12:30 PM, while others can't open until 1:00 PM. You can still get to essential services all day.

Northern Territory (NT): Everything is normal

Like the ACT, the NT doesn't have any rules. Most stores will be open as usual, while others may open a little later in the afternoon.
