England bowler Brydon Carse has been charged with an alleged breach of the England and Wales Cricket Board’s professional conduct regulations following an incident at a nightclub in Derby.
The charge was brought after an investigation by the Cricket Regulator into events on August 23, when Carse was out celebrating with his Durham teammates. During the evening, he was handcuffed by police officers.
Carse was subsequently confirmed to have been arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly. He was later “de-arrested” after agreeing to leave the area.
Derbyshire Police also examined an allegation of assault linked to the same incident. However, the force concluded in September that no further action would be taken.
Cricket Regulator announces charge
In a statement, the compliance body said: “Following a Cricket Regulator investigation, Brydon Carse has been charged with breaching regulation 3.2 of the ECB professional conduct regulations.”
The matter has affected Carse’s involvement with the England side. He was withdrawn from the squad for the second Test against Pakistan in the immediate aftermath of the incident and has not featured in international cricket since then.
England’s white-ball captain Harry Brook said last month that Carse required time away from the international game.
“I think he just needs time away from the international scene,” Brook said. “He’s working on a few things behind the scenes and hopefully he’ll be ready at some point in the future.”
Carse omitted from upcoming tri-series
On Thursday, Carse was not selected in England’s squad for the one-day tri-series involving Pakistan and Sri Lanka later this month.
The incident involving Carse was described as the latest in a run of alcohol-related controversies involving England since the team’s disappointing tour of New Zealand and Australia at the end of last year.
Test captain Joe Root said he had been “hacked off” that the episode diverted focus from his successful return as captain against Pakistan.
