The Board of Management of the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation in the United Arab Emirates reviewed a range of regulatory and strategic developments during its meeting on Tuesday, October 6, 2026.
The meeting also examined initiatives aimed at improving operational efficiency and strengthening national capabilities in the nuclear sector.
The board was briefed on key regulatory and organisational developments, including efforts to enhance customer experience and the launch of the UAE’s first National Environmental Radiation Measurements Portal. The meeting also covered progress in developing national nuclear capabilities and strengthening specialised expertise within the country’s nuclear regulatory system.
The board also received an update on the operational status of all four units of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, along with planned activities. FANR continues to carry out regular inspections at the plant to verify the operator’s compliance with regulatory requirements and to ensure the continued safe and secure operation of the facility.
Research and development projects were also reviewed, covering areas including nuclear safety, radiation protection, environmental studies and emerging technologies. The authority is using these research efforts to strengthen the UAE’s nuclear and radiation regulatory framework while working with national and international partners.
Another major topic was FANR’s Agentic AI Transformation Programme, which aims to support the responsible adoption of artificial intelligence across regulatory procedures, government services and strategic operations. The programme is being developed with a focus on strong governance, cybersecurity and human oversight as the authority expands the use of advanced technologies.
The latest developments highlight the UAE’s continued investment in a modern nuclear regulatory framework combining advanced technology, national expertise and continuous oversight. The launch of the environmental radiation measurement portal, ongoing inspections at Barakah and investment in research and development all form part of efforts to strengthen regulatory readiness and support evidence-based decision-making across the country’s nuclear and radiation sectors.
