Tokyo, Japan — Japanese police have arrested a US Marine on suspicion of murder and robbery after a 39-year-old woman was found dead in a hotel room in Naha, on Okinawa island.
The woman was discovered unresponsive in her room early Saturday and was pronounced dead at the scene, Okinawa police said. Officers said the condition of her body indicated that she appeared to have been murdered, though they did not release further details.
Police said the body was found at about 4:30 a.m. local time Saturday. The 20-year-old Marine was taken into custody less than 24 hours later, at around 1 a.m., while he was walking in the city.
The suspect was stationed at Futenma Air Station on Okinawa, according to police.
Investigators said surveillance camera footage showed a man believed to be a foreign national with a shaved head entering the hotel room with the woman. The footage later showed the man leaving the building carrying her belongings, police said.
The US Embassy in Tokyo said in a post on X that it was aware a US service member was in custody following the death of a Japanese national in Okinawa.
“As an investigation is underway to determine the facts of the case, the United States is communicating and cooperating with the Government of Japan and local authorities,” the embassy said.
Police said their investigation remains underway. CNN contacted the Pentagon and the US Marine Corps for comment.
