UAE authorities have revealed major new findings in the investigation into the incident involving flydubai flight FZ1073, with UAE Attorney-General Counsellor Dr Hamad Saif Al Shamsi announcing that investigators found the co-pilot had attempted to carry out a terrorist act during the flight.

According to the Attorney-General, the co-pilot began executing his plan while the aircraft was in flight and attacked the captain inside the flight deck using a crash axe before attempting to take control of the aircraft’s flight controls, marking a significant development in the official investigation.

Flight FZ1073 had departed Dubai International Airport for Tel Aviv before it was diverted and landed safely at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia following an altercation inside the flight deck, with flydubai crew members travelling on board intervening to help secure the aircraft.

UAE investigators are continuing their work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident, determine the motives involved and identify any related links, while technical examinations and the analysis of physical and digital evidence are also continuing as part of the investigation.

The Attorney-General had earlier ordered the formation of a specialised Public Prosecution investigation team to examine the case in coordination with the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority and other relevant authorities, with investigators tasked with collecting evidence and establishing the circumstances and causes surrounding the incident.

The General Civil Aviation Authority has also praised the courage and rapid response of Captain Machchhar Smit, the flydubai crew and passengers who helped bring the situation under control, saying their decisive intervention helped contain the incident and prevented more serious consequences.

The authority confirmed that Captain Smit had returned safely to the UAE, was in good condition and was receiving the necessary medical treatment, while the investigation continues under approved procedures and in coordination with relevant regional and international authorities and organisations.

UAE authorities have urged the public to rely on information issued through official channels and avoid spreading speculation or unverified claims while the investigation remains underway, with the Attorney-General confirming that the final findings will be announced once all required procedures and examinations have been completed.
