WhatsApp fixed a critical security issue on its iOS and Mac apps exploited to hack Apple devices.

WhatsApp, the popular instant messaging application owned by Meta, has announced the successful rectification of a significant security flaw in its versions for iOS and Mac operating systems. This vulnerability had previously been exploited to compromise targeted Apple devices.

The company revealed it addressed the security loophole officially identified as CVE-2025-55177. This issue was being exploited alongside another separate flaw discovered on iOS and Mac devices, which Apple managed to fix last week.

In its security notice, WhatsApp highlighted that the vulnerability was mitigated in conjunction with another flaw detected in iOS and Mac systems, named CVE-2025-43300, already patched by Apple. Together, these interlinked vulnerabilities allowed attackers to deliver malicious payloads through WhatsApp capable of extracting data from an Apple device.

The identity of those responsible for these attacks or any potential spyware entity involved remains unclear at this point. Margarita Franklin, a spokesperson for Meta, confirmed that the company identified and resolved the issue while notifying approximately 200 impacted WhatsApp users.

This incident is not unprecedented; WhatsApp users have previously been targeted by malware capable of breaching fully updated devices using undisclosed security gaps known as "zero-day exploits."
