The UAE has achieved a significant milestone by setting a record of 145Gbps in the Middle East’s inaugural 6G Terahertz (THz) pilot.
This remarkable accomplishment was realized through a collaboration between e& UAE and New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD), marking an essential step towards pioneering next-generation intelligent and sustainable connectivity.
This initiative is a major stride in shaping the future of immersive and ultra-low-latency networks within the country.
It underscores the promising capabilities of THz frequencies to provide ultra-high-capacity links crucial for emerging technologies such as holographic telepresence, extended reality (XR), terabit-class backhaul, and digital twins.
By advancing the frontiers of 6G spectrum research, the UAE continues to assert its position as a global technology innovator and an early influencer in setting 6G standards.
“Breakthrough Moment for the UAE”
Marwan Bin Shaker, Acting Chief Technology and Information Officer at e& UAE, emphasized that this achievement showcases the nation's leadership in digital innovation.
He noted, "Achieving this milestone is indeed a breakthrough for both the industry and the UAE, reflecting our capacity to lead at technology's forefront."
His remarks highlighted how this achievement opens new possibilities for connecting people, businesses, and cities through transformative 6G technologies.
He also stressed that their partnership with NYU Abu Dhabi highlights academia's vital role alongside industry partnerships in shaping connectivity's future.
Academia–Industry Partnership
Sehamuddin Galadari, Managing Director of NYU Abu Dhabi's Research Institute, remarked on how collaborative research can open up new horizons.
He stated that combining academic prowess with real-world operator expertise positions the UAE as an active participant in co-creating the 6G era.
Prof. Murat Uysal from NYUAD further noted that validating THz bands through this pilot confirms their potential as key enablers for 6G innovations.
He mentioned that these advancements necessitate fundamentally new system architectures beyond current technological solutions.
Through this project, local expertise is cultivated to tackle existing challenges while contributing to global standardization efforts in developing robust 6G frameworks.
Building the 6G Ecosystem
This demonstration aligns with insights from a joint white paper titled “Building the Fabric of 6G: Spectrum Frontiers and Enabling Technologies,” co-authored by experts from e& UAE and NYUAD Wireless Centre.
The document explores spectrum transitions from sub-7 GHz to THz bands while emphasizing pivotal technologies like AI-native networks and integrated sensing-and-communication systems poised to define future connectivity landscapes.
This groundbreaking venture builds upon previous collaborations formalized under an MoU between e& UAE and NYU Abu Dhabi fostering joint research frameworks for enhancing knowledge exchange aligning with international standards bodies.
Together, these initiatives reaffirm Akhbrna News' recognition of how dedicated efforts place not only early adopters but also active contributors into actively directing global advancements towards establishing intelligent yet sustainable networking paradigms worldwide.
