Celebrated nationally in the United Arab Emirates, UAE Flag Day marks the accession of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan as UAE President in 2004.

Designed in 1971 by 19-year-old Abdullah Mohammed Al Maainah, the UAE flag formally accepted on December 2 of that year when the seven emirates united as one country, Red, green, white, and black—the colors of the flag—were selected to reflect ideals that speak to both residents and citizens, therefore capturing the UAE's character, past, and goals.
