Dubai Ride 2024: Key Rules, Restrictions, and Transport Timings

Dubai is gearing up for one of the most anticipated cycling events of the year: the Dubai Ride, The iconic Sheikh Zayed Road, typically bustling with traffic, will be transformed into a dedicated bike track, allowing people of all ages and cycling abilities to ride through the heart of the city.

 As part of the annual Dubai Fitness Challenge, the event will bring thousands of participants together, with authorities working to ensure smooth traffic flow and availability of transport options.

To help participants plan ahead, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has released important information about road closures, metro timings, and the event’s schedule.

Road Closures and Alternatives

Since the Dubai Ride takes place on Sheikh Zayed Road, this major highway will be entirely closed for the event. Additional road closures are expected from 3:30am to 10:00am on Sunday, November 10. Affected routes include:

A section of Sheikh Zayed Road between the Trade Centre Roundabout and the second bridge
Lower Financial Centre Road between Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road
A one-way lane from Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard
Motorists are encouraged to use alternative routes like Al Mustaqbal Road, Al Wasl Road, and Al Khail Road, as outlined in the RTA’s guidelines.

Dubai Metro Timings

To accommodate participants, the Dubai Metro will operate earlier than usual on the day of the event. Both the Red and Green Lines will run from 3:00am to 12:00am. This extended service allows cyclists and spectators to reach the event on time, even if they need to travel from other parts of the city.

Event Schedule and Starting Points

The Dubai Ride will kick off promptly at 6:15am. Participants are advised to arrive at their selected starting points in advance, with gates closing at 7:30am, The event will last for two hours, concluding at 8:15am, There are five starting points for the 12km route along Sheikh Zayed Road:

  • Museum of the Future
  • Al Satwa
  • Coca-Cola Arena
  • Business Bay
  • Lower Financial Centre Street

For those with families, the 4km family route starts at Dubai Mall. Participants were asked to select their starting point during registration, so they should verify their details ahead of time.

Preparation and Requirements

To make the most of the event, participants should prepare in advance by ensuring they have everything they need:

  • Numbered Bib: A must for entry, which can be picked up from the Dubai Municipality Zabeel Park 30 x 30 Fitness Village until November 9.
  • Bicycle: Any bike with two working wheels and brakes is acceptable. E-bikes are allowed, but scooters and children’s 
  • bikes with training wheels are not permitted on the Sheikh Zayed Road.
  • Helmet: A mandatory requirement for all participants.
  • Water Bottle: Refill stations will be available, but it’s wise to start with a full bottle.
  • Bike Lights: Recommended, especially for those starting early, before sunrise.

Free Bike Rentals

Participants without their own bikes can take advantage of free bike rentals provided by Careem, in partnership with the RTA. Pop-up rental stations are available at the following locations:

  • Entrance A: Museum of the Future (MOTF), Trade Centre St
  • Entrance E: Lower Financial Centre Street, Financial Centre Road
  • Cyclists can access a one-day pass via the Careem app, using the code DR24, though bikes are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Cycling to and From the Event

Cycling to and from the event is allowed for those wishing to add a further challenge. Participants should be aware of local bike regulations, though, and be ready for the more congested roads once the event ends since roads will open to traffic.

Although Dubai Ride is not a competitive event, cyclists are urged to finish their laps by 8:15 a.m. Whether riding for joy or exercise, the event promises to be unforgettable for all those engaged. Marshals will be there to assist individuals who might need help or guidance.
