UNICEF condemns the deadly attacks in North Kordofan, Sudan, where over 450 civilians, including children, were killed. The agency fears rising casualty numbers and calls for an end to hostilities.

UNICEF has strongly condemned the recent "atrocious" attacks in Sudan's North Kordofan, which tragically claimed the lives of over 450 civilians.

According to reports, among the victims were at least 24 boys, 11 girls, and two pregnant women. The violence erupted over the weekend in communities surrounding the city of Bara, affecting villages like Shag Al-Num and Hilla Hamid, as noted on the official UN website on Wednesday.

UNICEF fears the toll among children may rise, with dozens injured and many reported missing.

UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell expressed grave concern, stating these attacks "represent a terrifying escalation of violence and a blatant disregard for human life, international humanitarian law, and basic principles of humanity."

She added, "Impunity for violations of international law is intolerable, especially when children's lives are at risk." Russell extended her deepest condolences to the families of the victims and all affected by this violence.

She emphasized the urgent need for an immediate cessation of hostilities between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces militia, whose conflict has intensified in the region since it began in April 2023.
