The UAE Cyber Security Council has reported over 12,000 cyber breaches attributed to public Wi-Fi networks, urging residents to adopt safe digital practices.

The United Arab Emirates is grappling with a significant increase in cyber threats associated with public Wi-Fi usage. The UAE Cyber Security Council (CSC) has highlighted the perilous nature of open and untrusted networks by disclosing that over 12,000 breaches have been recorded in the country since early 2025.

This alarming figure constitutes nearly 35 percent of all cyberattacks documented within the UAE, underscoring how hackers are capitalizing on insecure Wi-Fi connections to harvest passwords, financial data, and other sensitive information.

The CSC urges users to exercise caution when accessing free Wi-Fi and recommends adopting protective measures such as avoiding sensitive transactions online, enabling multi-factor authentication, and utilizing trusted security tools.

Wi-Fi Usage Concerns

Furthermore, it advises individuals to install reliable VPN applications as a critical step toward protecting personal and financial data against unauthorized access.

Dr. Mohammed Al Kuwaiti, Head of Cyber Security for the UAE Government, remarked: “Under the guidance of our wise leadership, the UAE steadfastly pursues its pioneering efforts to establish a secure cyberspace that shields users from escalating digital threats while keeping pace with rapid technological advancements."

These initiatives form part of a broader national strategy aimed at reinforcing trust within the country's digital environment by cultivating cybersecurity awareness and encouraging prudent browsing habits.

The Council also cautioned many underestimate risks linked with connecting to free Wi-Fi available in public areas such as cafés, airports, and shopping malls. Despite their convenience, these networks often lack adequate security measures," leaving users vulnerable to fraudulent schemes like phishing and malware attacks," noted Akhbrna News.

Citing specific dangers posed by unsecured Wi-Fi networks-such as intercepting user data or installing spyware without detection-the Council recommended three key precautions for those opting to use public Wi-Fi:

  • Implementing reliable VPN software to encrypt internet connections
  • Enabling "Safe Browsing" features within web browsers
  • Avoiding logins into high-risk accounts like online banking or personal emails

The Council elaborated: “Employing a dependable VPN not only safeguards privacy but serves as an effective tool for defending digital identities amid rising incidences of breaches. Awareness remains our foremost line of defense against cybercrime.”

Acknowledging ongoing challenges in cybersecurity education across society at large-the CSC announced the return of its Cyber Pulse awareness initiative on social media platforms for another year. This campaign endeavors to elevate understanding regarding online safety protocols-fostering best practices among individuals as well institutional stakeholders alike-to boost overall resilience against mounting cybersecurity threats globally."
