The Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) disclosed that, as part of its efforts to improve the infrastructure supporting school transportation in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, it conducted studies and created development plans for over 60 schools.
These included identifying transportation and traffic safety issues through direct connection with school administrators, as well as performing field trips and surveys.
According to the ITC, these efforts resulted in the development of specific solutions for each school, such as increasing the number of allocated parking places for buses and private vehicles and enhancing traffic flow near schools, which all contribute to better traffic safety.
It also announced that it plans to deploy field inspection teams to various school sites facing traffic congestion at the start of the school year to improve traffic flow around schools.
It also plans to update bus technical specifications and include new safety and security features, such as placing an additional "stop" sign for new buses that seat more than 40 passengers.
The Integrated Transport Centre (ITC), which is linked with the Department of Municipalities and Transport, has declared that its preparations for the new school year are complete, as part of its continued efforts to ensure a safe commuting environment for pupils.
The center's strategy intends to provide a safe daily journey for students to and from school, as well as smooth traffic flow in the areas surrounding schools for all road users, including pedestrians, school bus riders, public transportation users, and private automobiles.
The concept is built around two primary pillars: increasing student awareness of traffic safety regulations and enhancing road infrastructure and services near schools. The center is focused on adopting these steps to ensure the greatest levels of safety and flexibility in transportation at the start of the school year.
The initiative is being carried out in partnership with key partners, school administrators, and the Abu Dhabi Police General Command.
These steps are a result of the Integrated Transport Center's involvement in boosting traffic safety efforts to produce a safe transportation system and the wise leadership's objective of improving quality of life and making Abu Dhabi a safer and more secure community, particularly for students.
In terms of awareness, the center ran various campaigns during the last academic year, reaching out to a large number of Abu Dhabi schools.
These initiatives aimed to increase kids' understanding of traffic safety laws when using school buses and crossing roads near schools. More than 900 kids took part in these efforts.
The center is planning to restart similar initiatives with the start of the new 2025-2026 academic year, including a larger number of institutions.
