Dubai Electronic Security Center has issued a warning about a growing wave of digital fraud involving fake QR codes sent through email as scammers exploit fast information sharing to trick users into believing these codes provide urgent updates or essential services.
The center explained that these scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated as scanning such codes may lead to the installation of malicious software on devices or redirect users to fake websites designed to steal personal and financial information.
It highlighted that attackers rely heavily on urgency and trust to push users into quick interaction without verifying sources which significantly increases the risk of data breaches and financial loss within a short time frame.
Users were strongly advised to verify the source of any email before scanning QR codes and to avoid interacting with suspicious messages while also refraining from entering any personal details on untrusted or unknown links.
The center emphasized the importance of raising digital awareness and adopting simple preventive steps such as checking links carefully before opening them as these actions play a crucial role in reducing exposure to cyber threats.
It also recommended the use of the Razem application developed by the center which provides real time alerts about suspicious websites and helps users scan and verify links before accessing them enhancing overall online safety.
The warning concluded by stressing that staying cautious and following cybersecurity guidelines is the first line of defense in protecting personal and financial data as cyber threats continue to evolve rapidly.
