The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), in partnership with Dubai Aviation City Corporation, has granted a contract to expand and modernize the bridge connecting Terminal 1 at Dubai International Airport. The project's goal is to improve traffic flow to the airport, minimize travel time, and improve customer experience. The project also supports the continuous growth of passenger traffic at Dubai International Airport, which is estimated to exceed 92 million by 2024.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the RTA's Board of Executive Directors, stated that the project comprises widening the existing bridge from three to four lanes.
A new bridge will be built employing an innovative system of steel box girders and a composite concrete slab.
This technical solution was chosen due to its great structural efficiency and short project length, which eliminates the requirement for traffic diversions on Airport Road.
It also avoids the need to place temporary supports beneath the bridge, resulting in no disruption to existing traffic and the strictest safety standards.
He added: "The total length of the bridge, including ramps, is 171 meters, including a bridge approximately 70 meters long.
The project also includes road paving improvements, infrastructure services, and landscaping to ensure integration with the surrounding infrastructure. Street lighting will also be provided to enhance safety and visibility.
He noted that the new expansion will increase the bridge's capacity from 4,200 vehicles per hour to 5,600 vehicles per hour, a 33% increase. Infrastructure Development
He emphasized the Roads and Transport Authority's commitment to developing Dubai's road network and transportation infrastructure, improving the efficiency of main road corridors, and providing sustainable and flexible public transportation options that help residents and visitors move around, improve quality of life, and boost Dubai's global competitiveness as an attractive hub for international events.
He emphasized that the bridge expansion project leading to the airport is part of the Authority's efforts to improve traffic flow and promote connectivity between important roadways and vital facilities, most notably Dubai International Airport, the world's busiest airport for international visitors.
He stated that the bridge extension helps to increase road capacity, improve traffic safety, and reduce travel time during peak periods.
