The UAE signs a global declaration protecting humanitarian workers, emphasizing commitment to international laws and safe aid delivery.
The United Arab Emirates has signed the Declaration on the Protection of Humanitarian Workers during a high-level event held in New York, ahead of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly. This significant step was taken by Reem Al Hashimy, Minister of State for International Cooperation, and Sultan Al Shamsi, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Development and International Organizations, underscoring the UAE's unwavering commitment to international humanitarian law. It emphasizes the duty to respect and protect humanitarian workers while ensuring that aid reaches those in need swiftly and safely without impediments.
Initiated by a broad international coalition, this declaration seeks to translate commitments into practical measures enabling nations to enhance the security and safety of humanitarian personnel, aligning with UN Security Council Resolution 2730 (2024). Reem Al Hashimy highlighted the pride with which the UAE joins this global effort aimed at safeguarding humanitarian workers in conflict zones.
"As we commence the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly," she stated, "we affirm that humanitarian work is not merely an ethical obligation but a fundamental pillar for establishing sustainable peace." The UAE remains committed to collaborating with partners to bolster adherence to international humanitarian law and expand access to humanitarian aid promptly and securely while holding accountable those responsible for attacks against aid workers.
The UAE will further support implementing this declaration through its involvement in the Friends of Humanitarian Workers' Protection group based in Geneva. This platform unites supportive nations focused on enhancing coordination, sharing best practices, and upholding respect for international humanitarian law globally.
